"WAGES History and Lessons, 1995-2000" describes WAGES' program and the important lessons we learned in our first five years. After working with several groups of women to organize diverses businesses, we changed our strategy to focus on a single sector of the economy - eco-friendly housecleaning. We clarified the key criteria for selecting new business projects in order to create dignified and well-paid work for as many women as we could. We developed an intensive pre-business start-up education program that utilizes the leadership and skills of women to teach their peers. In addition, we honed the responsibilities of the cooperative business manager, as well as the contractual relationship between WAGES and the cooperatives we create.
