A Revolution in Spring Cleaning: South County Women to Open Santa Clara County's First Environmentally Safe Housecleaning Cooperative on April 30, 2001!
4/21/01

Morgan Hill , CA - Just in time to help you keep your Earth Day promises to reduce, reuse and recycle, Eco-Care Professional Housecleaning is celebrating the Grand Opening of its first environmentally safe cleaning business on April 30, 2001 from 4:00 – 6:00 pm at the Learning and Loving Education Center on Monterey Road in Morgan Hill.

Eco-Care Professional Housecleaning, a women’s cooperative working to protect the environment, is owned by nine low-income women from Morgan Hill, Hollister and San Martin who have been working for over a year to realize their dream of owning their own business. In addition to preserving the environment, the founding vision of Eco-Care Professional Housecleaning’s owners is to protect their health and the health of their clients and to educate customers about the benefits of environmentally safe cleaning.

The nine founders of Eco-Care participated in training programs sponsored by the Learning and Loving Education Center, which provides English classes and computer instruction for women in the Morgan Hill area, and Women’s Action to Gain Economic Security (WAGES), a non-profit organization in Oakland that helps empower low-income women to start their own businesses.

As part of their extensive training, Eco-Care’s founders participated in over 70 hours of intensive training in environmentally safe cleaning methods. In addition, they created their own business plan and obtained start-up loans from Lenders for Community Development, a consortium of banks in San Jose.

Not only does Eco-Care Professional Housecleaning represent a path to economic self-sufficiency for its nine founders – the business is also an opportunity for the women to experience the responsibilities associated with ownership, to make decisions collectively, and to learn new skills ranging from budgeting to marketing to conflict resolution.

Eco-Care’s owners, who are dedicated to the highest quality of service, use a variety of environmentally friendly products such as baking soda, white vinegar, and vegetable-based soaps. These products, when combined with their specialized cleaning techniques, are at least, if not more, effective than conventional cleaning methods which harm the environment and the health of clients and housecleaners alike.

Eco-Care Professional Housecleaning will offer service from South San Jose to Gilroy from its base in downtown Morgan Hill. Housecleaners provide all their own products and tools, perform move-in/move-out service, and are committed to helping you come home to a clean house, protect your family’s health, and preserve the environment. Eco-Care would like to invite everyone from the community to its Grand Opening celebration at the Learning and Loving Education Center to thank you for your support.
