Two
Women-Owned Cooperatives Receive Special Recognition Durning
Pollution Prevention Week
|
Oakland
, CA - Two Bay Area
business cooperatives, Emmas Eco-Clean of Redwood City
and Eco-Care Professional Housecleaning of Morgan Hill, were
honored during National Pollution Prevention Week, September 17-23.
Both
co-ops, which receive technical assistance from WAGES (Womens
Action to Gain Economic Security), a private, non-profit organization
based in Oakland, provide high quality cleaning services, while
at the same time ensuring the health of the environment, themselves
and their clients by using only least-toxic cleaning products.
Eco-Care
Professional Housecleaning was awarded a Bay Area Green Business
certificate at a special ceremony held at the Morgan Hill City Council
last night (Sept. 19). In order to become certified as a green business,
the cooperative had to comply with certain environmental regulations
and implement specific Green Business Measures, including
practices to reduce solid waste and monitor utility and water usage
- as set out by the Santa Clara County Green Business Program.
Emmas
Eco-Clean,
was recently nominated by one of its clients for the 2001 San Mateo
Sustainability Award, and invited to attend an upcoming luncheon
honoring all this years nominees and recipients at the Westin
Hotel in Millbrae. This award is given annually by Sustainable San
Mateo County to: individuals, groups, business, projects and
organizations whose actions enhance the regions long-term
social well-being and economic vitality, and support a healthy eco-system.
WAGES
promotes economic opportunities for low-income women through business
cooperatives. Since 1995 they have helped several cooperatives open
in the Silicon Valley. They are now looking to organize a new cleaning
co-op in Oakland.
