Safe and Green Housecleaning using the EFC method
|
We at WAGES share your concern about the many hazardous chemicals in commercial cleaning products that contaminate our groundwater and the air we breathe. These chemicals can also threaten the health of your family and of the janitors and housecleaners who work with these products every day.
To help you in your search for eco-friendly housecleaning solutions, we’ve developed the following resources:
Green Cleaning Tips, (also available in Spanish) including natural and least-toxic, commercial cleaning solutions
Eco-Friendly Cleaning (EFC) Product Screen Check-list a check-list to help you evaluate off-the-shelf products
Eco-Friendly Cleaning (EFC) Product Screen, the accompanying check-list document with criteria descriptions and a FAQ section
Top 20 hazardous chemicals to avoid a document listing the top 20 toxic ingredients in housecleaning products to avoid
Over a decade ago WAGES developed a safe, eco-friendly cleaning technique that protects workers and the environment. Used by all of the WAGES housecleaning cooperatives, our EFC technique sets a high bar for safety and environmental responsibility. It includes:
- Selecting products and cleansers which are biodegradable, effective, and do not contain harmful ingredients.
- Prioritizing products that are plant-based, have minimal packaging, and minimize water usage.
- Selecting durable tools such as cotton cloths, rather than paper towels or disposable wipes and mops.
- Using proven cleaning techniques to apply these products and tools in the most effective ways.
We hope you’ll find these handy resources to be solutions for your green-cleaning needs. Let us know!
