View , CA - Womens Action to Gain Economic Security
(WAGES), is a private, non-profit organization located in Mountain
View, CA that helps low-income women reach economic independence
by starting their own business cooperatives. WAGES has been successfully
starting and replicating women-owned and operated businesses here
on the Peninsula since 1995. In collaboration with Non-Toxic Professional
Housecleaning and Emma's Eco-Clean, WAGES was awarded the 1999 Peninsula
Conservation Center Foundation's Business Environmental Award in
the category of Social Equity for Sustainability.
WAGES would like to
announce that it has received the following grants which will support
their programs and operations in 2000:
California Wellness
Foundation - $10,000
Catholic Healthcare West - $10,000
Comerica Bank - California Foundation - $2,500
Greater Bay Bancorp Foundation - $10,000
Luke B. Hancock Foundation - $25,000
Peninsula Community Foundation - Littlefield Fund - $20,000
Wells Fargo Bank - $10,000
In addition, WAGES has
received tentative word that they will receive a $64,000 grant from
the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency for Pollution Prevention.
With this financial
support, WAGES is looking forward to some exciting work. The organization
plans to launch a website, train low-income women how to teach their
new business partners in the benefits of non-toxic housecleaning
practices, create business internships within WAGES, continue on-going
technical support to the existing businesses and to replicate a
new least-toxic housecleaning cooperative in south San Jose/Morgan
Hill.
