Alicia
Prior to joining Home Green Home, Alicia worked part-time in commercial laundry and helped her husband with his janitorial work. Financial worries weighed on her family, as she struggled to support her infant daughter and her aging parents in Mexico. She learned of WAGES’ new San Francisco co-op from a local community-based organization where she sought help finding better work, and joined in 2009 as the business was getting started. To raise the $400 stake she needed to become a worker-owner, she and her husband collected recycling to cover half of the investment and the co-op arranged for her to deduct the remainder from her earnings over a few months.
Today Alicia says, “I am very satisfied at Home Green Home - work is stable and my salary is good. Because of the co-op, I have been able to help my parents with medical expenses, and help pay for my younger brother’s schooling. My main goal is to find a bigger and better place to live, and I am striving to learn more English. Even though I haven’t quite mastered the language now, I feel more confident and am learning from my clients.”
